ISA Activity: Project SEARCH
Five
students of G.D.GOENKA PUBLIC SCHOOL, SECTOR 22, ROHINI, with their Economics teacher Ms.Priyanka Raheja attended a cluster workshop organized by TERI on October 1, 2013 at the Manav Rachna International School.
TERI is a not-for-profit research
institution, actively engaged in a number of research and awareness generation
activities on environment, energy, climate change, education and communication
worldwide, as a part of project SEARCH.
Project SEARCH is
a school education programme that aims to raise awareness amongst students,
teachers, school community and the society at large on waste management. The
idea is to encourage the young students and teachers to practice the 4Rs –
refuse, reuse, reduce and recycle – in their daily lives and make consumption
choices that would ensure the sustainability of the planet in the years to
come. Through this programme, a sincere attempt is being made to instill a
sense of responsibility in the target group, to take ownership of the waste
generated by them and make efforts to increase a product’s life cycle by
recycling it.
The workshop was an eye opener.Sensitization
was done using non-formal teaching methods which involved interactive discussions, simulation
exercises, games and group activities. The workshop was designed around a module comprising of 3
overarching themes – (a) Understanding the Environment with special focus on waste management (b) Culture of Waste:
Lifestyle and Consumerism (c) Environmental Leadership: Living the 4Rs.A movie was also screened as a part of the workshop.
Workshop gave a chance to students to realize their true potential and empowered them to make a difference to other people’s lives . Students were guided to train and enable other students to become leaders and active participants in sustainable development movement and not remain passive observers to a critical process.
